Butterfield Bank keeps Bermuda Island Gamers on track

The Butterfield Bank Employee Trust (BBET) has donated $6,000 to the Bermuda Island Games Association.

Hamish McCallum, BBET Treasurer, said this was the second year in a row that BBET had donated to the cause.

“It’s from the Butterfield Bank Employee Trust,”Mr. McCallum said. “BBET is funded by contributions from Bank employees, with the Bank matching the employee contributions,”

Jon Gazzard, General Secretary of the Bermuda Island Games Association said the donation would help Bermuda’s athletes participate in the 2007 games in Rhodes, Greece.

“Bermuda will have approximately 200 competitors going from June 30 to July 6, 2007, for a range of sports – 14 different sports,” Mr. Gazzard said. “Butterfield Bank Employee Trust came on board for the 2005 Shetland Games and they have now sponsored two athletes for the 2007 games.”

Mr. Gazzard, who also plays volleyball for Bermuda, said the BBET donation would mostly go towards transportation and accommodation. He also said the Games would improve the Island’s community spirit because a wide spectrum of the population will participate, including cross-sections of Bermudians and non-Bermudians.

“The nice thing about the Island Games is that to be a participant you have to be a resident on the member island for one year prior to the games,” Mr. Gazzard said.
