Hamilton, Bermuda―11 August 2016: The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited (“Butterfield”) today announced that its Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate and Sir A. Dudley Spurling Postgraduate Scholarships have been awarded to Maha Clarke and Kai O’Doherty, respectively.

Maha, our undergraduate recipient, graduated from Warwick Academy this year and is currently enrolled at Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina where she plans to gain an undergraduate degree in Business and International Relations. Her plan is to then follow on with their Master’s Programme for a degree in International Business, and eventually move on to Law School. Maha is an avid viola player, a proud member of the Bermuda Under 21 Field Hockey Team and captain of the Bermuda Longtails Field Hockey Club. Maha wishes to become highly involved in the sporting community at Queens. Following her degree, she aims to carve out a career as a lawyer in the International Business arena and give back to her community whilst supporting the Bermuda Hockey Federation, to grow awareness of the game.

The Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to a Bermudian student commencing, or already pursuing, an undergraduate degree overseas at an accredited university. This Scholarship has been offered every year since 1978 to honour Butterfield’s late Chairman, former Rhodes Scholar, Sir Harry D. Butterfield, whose distinguished career in public and business life was dedicated to the betterment of Bermuda and Bermudians. The award has an annual value of $25,000.

Kai, our postgraduate recipient, recently graduated from McGill University in Canada where he attained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and International Development Studies. He is currently enrolled at the University of Edinburgh where he plans to gain an MSc in Comparative Public Policy. Kai is very passionate about justice-seeking community efforts. He worked closely with the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce (BEST) and is a founding member of the human rights organisation The Rainbow Alliance of Bermuda. He plans to use his degree to work in Bermuda as a social policy advocate and analyst with a focus on human rights issues and the improvement of social services with the hope of leading important, long-lasting, equitable change in Bermuda.

The Sir A. Dudley Spurling Postgraduate Scholarship is awarded to a Bermudian student commencing or pursuing a post-graduate degree at an approved university abroad. This Scholarship has been offered every year since 1986 in memory of Sir A. Dudley Spurling; sportsman, former member of Education, past Speaker of the House of Assembly and, at the time of his passing, Vice-Chairman of Butterfield’s Board of Directors. The award has an annual value of $25,000.

Lee Simmons, Chairman of Butterfield’s scholarship committee “Encouraging talented young Bermudians to dream big and achieve more is a key part of why, for so many years, Butterfield has offered scholarships for post-secondary studies. Through the Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate and Sir A. Dudley Spurling Postgraduate Scholarships, we’ve helped numerous students rise to their potential and inspire success in others.” Each year, Butterfield selects scholarship recipients from among hundreds of deserving applicants. Criteria used in selecting scholarship recipients include academic achievement, financial need, character, leadership qualities, civic attainment and involvement and achievements in non-curricular activities, including the arts and sports.

Mr. Simmons adds, “Congratulations to Maha and Kai for being the successful recipients of the 2016 scholarship awards. I look forward to watching them progress through their academic careers.”
