Meet the Team

John Richmond
Managing Director, Butterfield Trust (Bermuda) Limited

John joined Butterfield in May 2016 as the Head of the Family Office of Bermuda Trust Company Limited, a subsidiary of Butterfield Trust (Bermuda) Limited (“BTBL”). He has over 21 years of experience managing complex Trust structures for our ultra high net worth families across multiple jurisdictions. John was previously with HSBC Private Bank (Bermuda) prior to joining BTBL. John is a Director of Bermuda Trust Company Limited and acts in a personal capacity on a variety of Boards, Foundations and Private Trust Companies. John is a member of the Institute of Directors.

Michelle Malpas
Vice President, Deputy Managing Director, Butterfield Trust (Bermuda) Limited

Michelle has over 15 years experience in the Private Client Industry and seven years in Risk and Compliance. Michelle joined Butterfield Trust (Bermuda) Limited in January 2005 and later transitioned to Operational Risk Management where she played a pivotal role in the implementation of the operational risk methodology across the Group. In 2010 Michelle was promoted to Vice President Operational Risk Management and in April 2013 she transitioned back to Butterfield Trust as Vice President Trust Services and in October 2013 was appointed Deputy Managing Director.

Over the last twenty-five years Michelle has worked within some of Bermuda’s major law firms and trust companies and has garnered extensive experience in the areas of Trust Management and Administration, Wills/Estates, Company Administration, Compliance and Risk Management.

Michelle received her Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners Dip (ITM) in 2003.

James Stooke, B.A., M.A., TEP
Vice President, Butterfield Trust (Bermuda) Limited

James is responsible for directing marketing and business development efforts at Butterfield Trust (Bermuda) Limited, as well as managing select key client relationships. James has more than 30 years’ experience in the wealth management industry and has travelled professionally to most global markets from bases in The People’s Republic of China, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, The Bahamas, and Bermuda. His experiences have contributed to his deep understanding of the needs of families around the globe and also the services and fiduciary solutions available through various international financial centres. Prior to joining Butterfield, James held senior roles with CIBC, HSBC, Scotiabank and Merrill Lynch. He is a Member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Calgary, and a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from Ottawa’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.

Jonathan Dunlop, MBA, Dip (ITM, TEP)
Vice President, Trust Services, Butterfield Trust in Bermuda

Jonathan has built over 20 years experience in the Financial Services industry. In his role he is responsible for attracting and developing an international portfolio of client relationships for Butterfield Trust, and dealing with the complex needs of international families. Jonathan began his career at Royal Trust in Toronto, Canada in 1994 shortly after it was purchased by Royal Bank of Canada. He then moved to Bank of Bermuda as a Trust Officer in July 2000 which was then acquired by HSBC in 2004. Jonathan joined Butterfield Trust in 2016 when Butterfield acquired HSBC’s Trust Company in Bermuda.

Jonathan is Chair of the Bermuda STEP Committee and regularly contributes to the STEP Journal. He has also presented on panels in Bermuda, London and New York, for both STEP and Business Bermuda.
